Privacy
What this site keeps, and why.
No cookies, no adverts, no fingerprinting and no trackers from anyone else. Visitors in the EU and EEA are not counted at all unless they choose to be. Here is everything the site keeps.
Who we are
This site is run by Divyesh Bine, who trades as YetAnotherSoftwareCompany in London, United Kingdom. He decides what happens to the information on this page, which makes him its controller under data protection law. For anything about it, email divyesh@yetanothersoftwarecompany.com.
When you write to us
The contact form keeps what you type: your name, email address, topic and message. It also keeps the time you sent it and the country your connection came from.
- Why: to read it and reply, and to arrange a call if you asked for one. If you chose “Our products”, also to email you once when the first product is ready. We do not add you to a mailing list, and we do not sell or share what you send.
- Legal basis: taking steps you have asked for before a possible contract, or our legitimate interest in answering people who write to us (Article 6(1)(b) and (f) of the UK GDPR and the EU GDPR). For the one email about our products, your consent (Article 6(1)(a)), which you can withdraw at any time by telling us.
- How long: up to 24 months after you sent it, then it is deleted automatically. Ask, and we delete it sooner.
To stop the form being flooded, the site keeps a scrambled code made from your connection for one day, which lets it allow five messages a day. The code is cleared the next day.
When you read the site
The site counts what gets read, so we can see which pages are useful and improve them. Whether your visit is counted depends on where you are:
- In the UK and outside the EU and EEA: visits are counted, unless you switch stats off below.
- In the EU and EEA: nothing is counted unless you switch stats on below. If you never do, the site sends nothing about your visit.
- Anywhere: if your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track, nothing is counted.
To know which applies, the page asks the site which country your connection comes from. The answer is used once and nothing is kept. A line at the foot of every page says whether counting is on, with a switch to change it.
A counted visit records:
- the page, which of its sections came into view, how long it was open and in view, and how far down it was read;
- links you clicked, in the menu or to other sites, whether you clicked the email address, and whether you started the form, sent it or hit a problem with it;
- the site you came from, by name only (for example linkedin.com), and any campaign tags in the link;
- your country, and the kind of device and family of browser and operating system (for example mobile, Safari, iOS).
It does not record your town, your network or your screen size.
How it counts visits without cookies. While stats are on, your browser keeps today’s date in its local storage, so the first page you open each day counts as a visit and the rest count as page views. Your internet address is used only to look up your country, and is never stored. Nothing links one day’s visit to another’s.
Kept apart from messages. Records that the form was started or sent are stored separately from the rest of the visit, so a message cannot be matched to what its sender read.
Added up within a day. Every morning the site adds the day’s records into daily totals, such as views per page or visits per country, and deletes the records themselves. Only the totals are kept. Cloudflare keeps a short restore history of the database, so deleted records are gone for good after at most 30 days.
- Legal basis in the UK: the rules on storage and access allow a site to collect statistics to improve itself without asking first, as long as it tells you and you can say no. This page and the switches are for that. Under data protection law, the basis is our legitimate interest in knowing which pages are useful (Article 6(1)(f) of the UK GDPR).
- Legal basis in the EU and EEA: your consent, given with the switch below. You can take it back at any time with the same switch.
- How long: the records of a single visit, until the next morning. The daily totals, 13 months.
Your choice
The switch below, and the one at the foot of every page, saves your choice in this browser’s local storage rather than a cookie. A “yes” lasts six months, then it lapses. Apart from today’s date while stats are on, it is the only thing this site stores on your device.
With JavaScript off, this site sends no stats at all.
Who else is involved
Cloudflare hosts the site and its database, and handles both for us under its data processing terms. Cloudflare places the database in Western Europe. Like any host, it sees the connection details it needs to deliver pages to you. It may process data outside the UK and the EU, with the safeguards its terms set out: its certification under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, and standard contractual clauses. Its own policy is at cloudflare.com/privacypolicy.
Information moves freely between the EU and the UK, because each recognises the other’s data protection law as adequate.
Emails you send us, and our replies, pass through our email provider, Fasthosts. Nobody else gets anything.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, ask us to limit how we use it, object to how we use it, or ask for it in a form you can take elsewhere. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time. Email divyesh@yetanothersoftwarecompany.com and we will answer within a month. Stats are not linked to names or email addresses, and after the morning only daily totals remain, so we cannot pick out one person’s visits from them.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, tell us first by email: we will confirm we have it within 30 days and then answer it. You can also complain to the UK’s data protection regulator at ico.org.uk, or, if you are in the EU or EEA, to the data protection authority where you live or work.
